16 months and 4 ops!

Really I should have named my blog..the eternity of knee pain. Its now 16 months and here I am again on crutches typing away with my knee going up and down in a CPM machine. On the bright side I was told I couldn't have another op for at least a year so hopefully some of he pain will go. On the down side the surgeon found a crater in the back of my patella which he says will always give me pain...how much remains to be seen but I suspect long term it is going to mean a TKR.
At least now all the screws have been removed from my knee and ankle as as this time the surgeon managed to get 150 degrees whilst MUA I feel there is some hope.

DVD of my OP!

Having had an MRI scan last week I saw my knee specialist today. The results- the second nail I had put in to correct the first one which was malrotated 30 degrees is actually fine ( I had been told my another doctor it was too long) Hooray...cheer cheer...I really didn't want a third nailing!
My knee pain is caused by Arthrofibrosis..scar tissue to you and me. I am to have keyhole surgery through both sides of the knee to remove loads of scar tissue on the left and right side of my knee and under the kneecap...he said he will also remove some loose cartilage and hopefully the scar tissue removal will take with it any neuromas I may have. The surgeon is going to make a DVD of the whole op and give me a copy!Weird Huh??
The surgeon says my knee should feel a whole lot better after the op and 10 days as a couch potato but more work will be needed and he hasn't ruled out further keyhole surgery. But hey this is so much better than having full surgery for the third rime and no plaster either. After 8 months on crutches last year my hands could not have taken more. My fingers wake me up regularly because they go numb or dislocate and I have to crack them back...Does anyone else have this problem?
Unfortunately I have to wait until the 20th March for my surgery but whats another 4 weeks when I have been in pain a year already? Meantime I have put in an official complaint to the first hospital who made such a bodge of things....they have legally 25 days to investigate so it will be interesting to read the report! It just shows if you think the doctors have it wrong go for a second opinion and don't give up!Di

My leg after it was rebroken

This is an xray of my leg 7 months after it was rebroken surgically. Since the surgeons couldn't get my leg right first time...I had to have my leg broken 5 months later and a new nail put through my leg. I have to have a MRI scan tomorrow so I am interested to see what problems the metalwork gives. Since now my leg is fine but my knee is buggered up I hope to walk again properly after my third operation

The Day Rubydoo changed my life

It was Valentines Day 2007. My next door neighbour was away on holiday and her fish pond had sprung a leak. All her Koi were just laying on top of each other. I filled up the pond and went back to check it lunchtime..I thought I would walk Ruby too. We were walking down the neighbours garden with Ruby on a lead when something freaked her. She ran violently in the other direction and as I stupidly had my lead around my wrist I could not let go. I remember being in mid air and as my walking boots touched the wet grass, desperately trying to get some grip. There was loud crack and I found myself laying on wet slimy concrete with Ruby licking my face. My leg didn't hurt just felt weird. I figured that I must have broken my leg due to the noise and knew it would hurt if I moved so I didn't bother. Thank goodness I had my mobile phone on me and was able to ring for an ambulance. I also rang my husband at work and asked him to cancel Valentines dinner that evening. I then rang my two step daughters and asked them to collect the dog as I had broken my leg...they thought I was joking!

Boy did it hurt when the ambulance man came and moved my leg and WOW did I love my boot being taken off...Gas and air doesn't touch the pain for this believe me. By the time I was wheeled into the ambulance I was high as a kite and I remember cracking all sorts of jokes about being allergic to Broken legs and telling the ambulance man that I was born on the day of the Great Train Robbery 08/08/63

I had a lovely time on a trolley in a corridor whilst student nurses either leant on my leg or placed the book on it...ouch that hurt! It was a long day during which I ended up having my leg set and then had the pleasure of 6 nurses lifting me into a hopital bed without me screaming too much.

I could not just break 1 bone like a normal person I hadd to go and break my Fibula and Tibia twice. The next day I was told I needed surgery to prevent the leg rotating...some joke that turned out to be!

1 year on from Broken Leg

Well I would like to say that I am healed or even most of the way there but no such luck. Without a doubt this has been the worst year of my life.I spent the first 5 months in agony due to having been nailed 30 degrees malrotated.
It took 5 months for my surgeon to admit the mistake.I then had the leg rebroken to straighten it and a new nail put through it. I was full of hope that this was it: now I could get better.
Unfortunately after this operation although the leg felt so much better my knee felt worse. Knee pain had started on the inside of my leg before the leg was rebroken due to all my weight going down the inside of my leg. After the operation I also had a lump on the outside of my knee and severe pain on that side. Now its 7 months on from the 2nd op and knee pain rules my life having gotten much worse in January.
It has taken 7 months for my surgeon to take any notice of me this time and his verdict is that it will get better on its own. He has not examined me, watched me walk or given me a MRI scan.I've just put in an official complaint and I wish I had been much more forceful earlier. I had faith in my hospital and now I have none. I can no longer stand long enough to do even the most simple tasks.By sheer stroke of luck a new job my husband started only 3.5 weeks ago gives me free medical insurance and covers pre existing conditions. Maybe 2008 will give me my life back after all and HEY my birthday this year is on 08/08/08 !!I saw the private knee specialist yesterday and he was astounded by my problems, he watched me walk, examined me and spent an hour asking me questions and then sent me for xray. His verdict...well he wants an MRI scan to confirm ( this Friday)is that there are 4 things wrong with my knee and 3 need operating on and the 4th physio. 1 of the problems stems from my original knee pain when my leg was twisted. He is certain he can fix the three operable things and told me never to let a surgeon operate again on my leg without an MRI scan. THe private medical insurance say they will pay for everything :-) and this surgeon gives me confidence. The ironic thing is my BL is well and truly better twice over but I'm still not even back to square one. It can only get better from here can't it??Di
